EU Intends to Increase Paper Packaging Recycling Index

The European Commission plans to increase the recycling index for paper packaging from 55% to 60%, and the controversial 22.5% gap between plastic recycling targets in the packaging waste directive is quite large. This change seems to displease the paper industry.

According to the existing regulations, the rate of regeneration of plastic packaging by EU member states should reach 15%, and criticisms have been criticized since the European Union first proposed specific targets for materials in 2000. The packaging waste directive became a regulation after the European Parliament voted in June or July. Information points out that the committee's proposal may be passed, but the original directive will make some changes, may be welcomed by the paper industry.

The deadline for the decree will also be extended from the end of 2006 to the end of 2008, and Greece, Ireland, and Portugal will be even more relaxed until the end of 2012.

The export of EU packaging waste will be close to that of Member States. The punishment system for harmful packaging for environmental protection is also under study and will be published in June 2005.
